Ramatuelle

Overview

The 'Château of Ramatuelle" oversees the Mediterranean Sea from a commanding position on the Cape Camarat, on the south-eastern shore of the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Set 100 meters (320 feet) above the sea level, it enjoys unimpeded views over the Mediterranean Sea on three sides and, to the east it gazes at its own immaculately tended vineyards. Only at a short drive from the village of Ramatuelle, the estate still offers complete privacy thanks to its extensive grounds and rocky waterfront.

Built between 1906 and 1912, this castle was designed to reflect the solid elegance of a traditional Tuscan palazzo. Its terracotta-colored stone towers are crowned by gently sloping tiled roofs and a central arched loggia, and then terraced gardens cascade down over its massive façade softening the building structure.

In 1999, the property was purchased by a group of Canadian investors, captivated by its magnificent views, the grand scale of its rooms and the promise of its gardens and vineyards. The interior was renovated, while respecting the original spirit of the building, turning its vast rooms and hallways into elegant but thoroughly living spaces.

The Mediterranean gardens

The gardens have been designed as a coherent progressive transition between the stone linear frontage of the property and the aromatic tangle of Mediterranean scrub that naturally covers the hill.  At the main entrance to the 'Château', a lovely fountain forms the centerpiece of a formal garden with clipped hedges of lavender and rosemary; this is the Mediterranean version of an Italian knot garden.  A rose garden, in bloom from late spring to October, lies just beyond.  Overhanging gracious umbrella pines, typical of the region, have been planted in the alleys between the vineyards. A series of terraces flows down the hills facing the sea.

With first a patio with balustrade and a central loggia, furnished for dining and lounging, reachable through the glazed openings of the castle's ground floor living areas. From these, short flights of steps lead down to the other terraces studded with ball-shaped rosemary bushes and bordered by rose flowerbeds. Some dark green cypresses stand like sentinels along the pathways. And at the edges of the landscaped gardens, olive and cork trees emphasize the entrance in the untamed area of the property.

**The property borders the Sea with small private beaches and a Boat Shed: It is a 20-minute walk from the Chateau, all through a private trail and about 50 steps. The boat House contains 2 paddles, 2 canoes, windsurf, & diving equipment
